Description

Access: To reach the Castel of Estelle, we must take the hiking trail Three Valleys from the hamlet of Gouillou, near the village of Izaut-de-Hotel.

The castle of Castel Estelle is located at 709m above sea level atop a mountainous terrain overlooking the village of Cabanac-Cazaux and the valley of Job.This site does not appear on any old map and has no written record mentioning it directly. Given its location, it was perhaps a stronghold exclusively for military function, locking the crossroads between the valleys of Job and Sauveterre. As it is installed to limit Izaut and Aspet, one can assume that it was built by the powerful families of Comminges and Coarraze, co-Lords of Cabanac in the course of the fourteenth century.

The site was nevertheless listed by Marie-Laure Pellan who described the remains as still standing. The castle, layered by an imposing wall, is dominated by the base of a square tower and has a large annex building (military home?).
